Here come the sprouts

These are probably being started way too early but what the heck.  Seeds aren’t that expensive and I’m wanting to run some tests.  I have more seeds that I am going to start in a few weeks which is closer to the standard starting dates.  However, in the mean time, I’m getting bored and want to see if I can have some tomatoes and peppers well on there way come mid-late April.

The seeds were planted last weekend in pots created out of newspapers.  Google newspaper pots and you’ll see what I’m talking about.  I heard about that from one of our neighbors and thought I’d give it a try.  The price was right and it all sounded good in theory.  I planted some peppers, red onions and tomatoes in the pots last weekend and during the week before.  A couple of the red onions actually sprouted in the home made pots.  However, the newspaper pots would not allow the seed starter to hold moisture except for in a couple places where the water soaked through the paper.  Where the paper stayed damp a bumper crop of mold started growing.  I don’t want to deal with mold so out went the paper pots.  I wish I would have taken some pictures of this but of course I didn’t.

So, I picked up some jiffy pots at the local hardware store for pretty cheap and transplanted the seeds from the newspaper pots to jiffy pots.  I’ve also picked up a heater for the seeds.  It’s a little mat that goes under the flat that the seeds are being started in.  So much for doing this on the cheap.

Anyway here is a pick of where we are now.

In the back left are three different types of Roma tomatoes that have started.  In front of the Roma’s are some New Mexico 4-L peppers from seeds from last years peppers.  They haven’t sprouted yet.  The two jiffy pots on the left of the 7 pots and the one in the middle are Poblano peppers from purchased seed that haven’t sprouted yet.  Front center is ceyenne from last years peppers, back center is serrano from last years peppers.  The two pots on the right are red onions from purchased seed.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet a large part of our garden this year is going to go to making fresh salsa.  I can’t stand eating tomatoes or onions, yet I love fresh salsa and/or pico.  Go figure.
