CBay to Dennery

We decided to hire a driver and take a day trip to Castries and the North Side of St. Lucia. So far, the entire trip was on the South side of the island. We wanted to see as much as possible.  After some negotiating at the activities center we were set.

The driver arrived at 9:30 the next morning. Everyone piled into a late model van and the six of us had plenty of room. The driver was friendly, but not real talkative.

After about 30 minutes of seeing jungle and bananas we made it to Dennery Lookout.

This was a great place to spend some time. The views from here were much more impressive than the above photo. Tried to create a nice panorama from here but it wasn’t in the works.

Dennery to Castries

From Dennery we went up and over the mountains to Castries. Do not expect to make good time traveling these roads. It’s all 2 lane and very windy. The views on this trip are also spectacular. There is not a bad view on St. Lucia that I’ve found yet.

We spent some time shopping in downtown Castries. It had to happen. The shopping here is like Mexico, Jamaica or anyplace in the Caribbean. Haggle, haggle and haggle some more. So tired of shopping, found a beer and waited for the driver. But, they did get me for a T-Shirt and some hot sauces first.

We tried to have lunch at the Coal Pot in Castries, but there was a very long line. So plan B for lunch is Spinnaker’s up in Gros Islet.

Spinnaker’s is not the cheapest place for lunch. But, the weather and the views don’t get much better than this. I can recommend the Jerked Beef Baguette with Pepper Jack Cheese. It’s not too pricey and it tasted great. They also have decent Rum Punches. Our party of 6 all enjoyed their meals and beverages.

Pigeon Island

The next stop was Pigeon Island. They had already picked up most of the beach chairs and it was too late to hike up to the fort. Sandal’s at the end of the beach didn’t want us on their property. So a little shopping there and I was ready for a quick beverage. There are two little shacks there selling drinks. Whatever, you do. Do NOT buy a Rum Punch from the one on the right as you are facing them. That was the nastiest and worst excuse for a rum drink that I’ve ever had.

The most exciting part of Pigeon Island was a crazy local lady. She was trying to pick a fight with several others that were standing around. There was a bunch of yelling and cussing. A couple items ended up tossed at people. But, no harm came to anyone and she ended up stumbling around for awhile before she disappeared.

It was a long, slow drive back to the resort. All in all it was a good day. If you go to St. Lucia you should spend at least a day in Castries. This is the part of the island that contains most of the resorts. So, there is a good chance you will be staying here.
