Lunch at Coyote Bluff

First full day in Amarillo. The customer and the repeat visitor to Amarillo both recommend Coyote Bluff Cafe for lunch. This place is cash only and is the beautiful establishment that you see above. This is a great dive bar for lunch. If you are in Amarillo you need to stop by here for lunch. Make sure you bring cash (or check). I had the Bacon Cheeseburger with fries. It did not disappoint. I ate the entire burger but couldn’t make it through the fries. Not that they weren’t good, I was full. There is also an old cast iron tub in the middle of the place filled with ice and beer. I didn’t sample any of the ice cold beer from the tub since I was working, but they did look nice and cold.

Dinner at Embers

We had dinner at Embers with yet another colleague that was in town from Dallas. I ordered the Prime Rib with Smashed Cheddar Potatoes for my side. The Prime Rib listed as a 10 oz. cut on the menu. They are not stingy and it was at least 10 oz. and was on the rare side of medium rare as requested. It wasn’t the best Prime Rib that I’ve ever had but it wasn’t very expensive and it tasted pretty good. The potatoes were pretty good as well. I’d have them again. Also, we ate kind of early and it was still happy hour. So, the glass of wine ended up being like $3.00 which helped keep us within our daily meal allowance.

Lunch at Dyer’s BBQ

After finishing up with our customer the next morning we all had a little time to kill before our flights. We ended up having lunch at Dyer’s BBQ. I’ve had more than enough to eat on this trip and thought I would grab something other than Texas brisket for lunch. I know that’s not quite right being at a BBQ place in Texas, but I need to moderate at some point. So, I ordered the Green Chili Chicken Sandwich and fries. I’m not sure how many calories, if any, that this saved. But, this was a great sandwich. It was pretty messy as peppers were falling off the sandwich every time I took a bite. But, it was a great sandwich. The fries were great as well, so as normal I ate most of what was on the plate and I was stuffed. I highly recommend Dyer’s if you are ever in Amarillo.

Back to the airport

Got to the airport with plenty of time to spare. There is a gas station at the airport exit, so don’t worry about finding gas for the rental car. The drop off at National is a little different, find a parking spot in their area outside. Then go inside and give them the keys.

Since this is a small airport don’t expect much relief if you have PreCheck. There was just one line when I went through security. Fortunately there were only about two people ahead of me. I’m not used to taking my laptop and tablet out of my computer bag or worrying about having my liquids in a bag for the 3-1-1 rule. I do carry the quart bag with me just in case something like this happens. I’m also glad there wasn’t a long line as there would have been people upset with me as I was trying to get my laptop and tablet out in a hurry.

Had a quick Deep Ellum IPA at the airport bar and then boarded the plane for an uneventful flight home through Dallas.
